This image of a tall, African American NBA star (Dennis Rodman) and North Korea’s dictator, Kim-Jung-Un is interesting. It has been North Korea’s strategy to use famous celebrities as propaganda tools. However, this time it’s even more interesting because the American journalists and TV show makers are actually allowed to take footage of the secretive country. Although I don’t expect the full truth of North Korea will be even allowed to be filmed at all, it will still be a very interesting and valuable observation of North Korea’s current status. Obviously, this interaction will not be a breakthrough in resolving diplomatic issues, like nuclear program. However, I like what the producers said,”We’re not politicians. We’re trying to show people something that they won’t see anywhere else.”
We don’t expect and actually probably won’t want them to act like politicians. But if this so called “basketball diplomacy” could start any sensible dialogue with one of the most isolated countries in the world, why not give it a shot?
