Due to Russia’s willingness to share and publicize Olympic terrorist threats, American congressional leaders are worried about the security of visitors and athletes alike. Although President Vladimir Putin has promised that he will do “whatever it takes” to protect traveling visitors, tensions between Russia and Washington has risen over the last week.
The worry of security and terrorist threats is not an unusual situation for any Olympic Games. The Russian government has promised a “ring of steel” surrounding the Sochi Games. They have installed a full panoply of security measure and prepared evacuation plans if necessary. With this precautions, President Putin has also offered that individual athletes may provide their own additional security as long as those efforts are strictly coordinated with the Russian authorities.
As the excitement of these Winter Games continues to grow, we can only hope that the proper security measures are being taken to protect all visitors and athletes. It is yet to been seen how cooperative the Russian government will be when the Games actually begin, until then American travelers and families must trust that President Putin truly is taking all necessary precautions to avoid any detrimental terrorist attacks.
