Chris Borland, one of the top rookies in the NFL last season, has just decided to retire at the age of 24. What could cause such a young, talented player to pass up on several more years of fame and millions of dollars? He stated that it’s the increasing evidence of links between head trauma and long-term cognitive problems. Will this decision by a great player like Borland start a trend steering kids away from playing football?
“Some parents will say it’s proof positive that football is too dangerous,” said Boland, the teacher. “It’s a nightmare for the N.F.L. and colleges because it shrinks the reach of the game. It could lead the image of the game down the path where the league or owners don’t want it to go.”
Time will tell how Chris Borland’s decision will affect how many kids continue to play football.
