Iran has sentenced a billionaire businessman to death. This comes as a result of accusations that Babak Zanjani participated in corruption that was “linked to oil sales during the rule of former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejab.” Zanjani was accused of money laundering and other charges. When I first heard the news that he would be put to death it gave me a newfound appreciation for the system that is in place in the United States. In this situation, the punishment does not seem equal to the crime. However, many of those residing in Iran feel that this crime is punishable by death because it had a major impact on society. The verdict can be appealed and I am curious to see how this story will play out.
