In the past few months, there has been a dramatic surge of applications for citizenship. Naturalization applications saw a 14% increase in just the last six months of 2015 and more than 1 million are expected in 2016. Why the rise? Because Latinos want to be able to vote in November for anyone but Mr. Trump! This is actually a huge social movement, with nonprofit groups and government agencies holding naturalization drives to help people get through the process in time for their voices to be heard. I think it’s amazing that people are acting in order to defend who they are and what they believe.
The movement comes in reaction to the extreme views Mr. Trump has taken on immigration and relations with Mexico. People want to be heard and, while Trump says that he “will do really well with Hispanics” after calling Mexicans “rapists and drug-traffickers,” polls by the Washington Post show that 80% of Latinos don’t view him positively. This is just another example in a long list of them of how Mr. Trump is delusional about his wide-spread appeal. The mobilization of so many Latino voters before November could make a significant difference in the election, especially because these people will have worked for their right to participate in the election and so are expected to actually turn out to cast their vote. The movement is self-motivated because people want to stop the spread of Trump’s power, which is pretty cool that they are acting to protect their interests. It’s the true American spirit being shown in these soon-to-be citizens! Isn’t that exactly what we want out of members of this country?
