A NYT photographer went to Palmyra, Syria to look at the remains of the archeological site. After a year of being under control by the Islamic State, centuries of Roman, Persian, and local culture laid in a rubble.

Luckily, many of the ancient sites in Palmyra were undamaged. The destruction of the surrounding area was much more apparent. It is sad to see the destruction of past culture and civilization. It is even more heart wrenching to see the destruction of a present culture and civilization due to war and conflict. The photographer spoke about the destruction of modern parts of Tadmur being far worse with empty shops and cafes.

How much longer will this last? How much longer will people have to shift their lives and migrate out of their homes?
