Wednesday of this week, two strong earthquakes rocked Italy of magnitudes 5.4 and 5.9. Many buildings fell down, power lines were destroyed, and people were hospitalized. This area in central Italy has been hit by a number of earthquakes recently and the population has become continuously nervous about when the next one might hit. Just two months ago, 300 died from an earthquake and the mental strain from this accident was reiterated on Wednesday. Geologists said that this recent earthquake is likely a tremor or aftershock of those that hit in August and that aftershocks can continue for up to 6 months. So, it looks like the Italians can’t rest quite yet, but this highly seismic area is being retrofitted to be more earthquake safe so that catastrophes like this don’t produce as much damage. Earthquakes and other natural disasters can tear apart communities and populations, so it is important to do all that we can to prevent earthquake damage as much as is economically feasible.
