In the war on terror, social media has become the main avenue for ISIS and Taliban recruiting efforts. Focusing on glorified clips and pictures of war, ISIS targets youth that are susceptible to radicalization. The Taliban is starting to take notes, and has since transitioned into a social media propaganda first tactic.

Creating an artificial vacuum, Taliban insurgents are taking advantage of the spread of social media in rising Asia to share their messages and propaganda. As such, the main effort that we’ve seen in recent weeks is a glorification of the battlefield, and a sense that the “good guys” are beating the tyrannical government. Tweets of live combat are being transferred on the web in an attempt to persuade teenage boys to join the effort; they want to motivate their follows and make them believe that they’re winning the fight.

Little has been done to halt the Taliban’s advances on the web. The propaganda is resonating with a growing contingency of the Afghan population, leading many to believe that the legitimate government is on the defensive.

What is, if any, the role of the western founders of Twitter, Instagram, FaceBook, etc. vis à vis the distribution of terror and propaganda through their social media outlets? How can it be controlled? Should it be controlled?
