Choi Soon-sil, a 40 year friend to the South Korean President, was widely seen as the president’s secret adviser although she held no official government title. She is the daughter of a religious leader who had befriended the president, claiming that he could help her contact her dead mother. It is believed that he exercised a strong influential hand on the president while he was alive, and used it to collect bribes.

It seems that his political influence didn’t end with his death, but continued through his daughter Choi Soon-sil. Rumors flew as Ms. Choi meddled in government affairs, and installed her associates in the government.

Ms. Choi was jailed on Tuesday after being questioned over allegations that she had manipulated important government affairs. She was accused of using her influence over the president to extort $69 million from big big businesses in the form of donations to two foundations she controlled.
