Hispanic grandmothers (abuelas), are exercising their familiar and community influence to activate voters and sway them toward the Democratic presidential candidate. With an anti-immigrant candidate and a female candidate, these abuelas take this election seriously and personally. Arizona, a highly conservative state, is turning bluer. This may be due, to some degree, to abuelas who are taking every opportunity to influence their large families and communities. It is important to recognize how trusted friends and relatives have a more powerful impact people than celebrities and politicians. Read NYT article here.
