China’s government made history when it lifted the one child policy last year, and now Chinese couples are allowed to legally have two children. However, China is still struggling with low infertility and birthrates, and that’s beginning to affect the country’s economy. Couples who have more than two children are fined, and women who get pregnant without being married face up to thousands of dollars in fines as well.
People are saying that the smart thing for China to do would be to allow single Chinese women to have children. Groups in China are calling for more reproductive freedom for women across the country.
The government has yet to respond to these demands for more women’s rights and freedom, but it would be extremely interesting to see the social changes that might occur as a result. Allowing single women to have children on their own would certainly change the dynamic of the family unit in China.
