The recent economic collapse under Pres. Hugo Chavez has led starving Venezuelans to flee the country in search of food. Over 150,000 have fled in the last year, many being subjected to cruel smugglers who carry them to Brazil or the Caribbean. Although Venezuela was once a rich country, low-income people are facing such a struggle to survive, that they realize their best option is to escape to a land of better hope, despite the challenges of the journey and hostility of other countries.
