All across Beijing supermarkets have emptied their freshwater fish tanks without explanation. It has caused speculation from local citizens, and from international news sources. Speculations range from contamination to fear of inspection. At any rate, consumers are concerned about the freshwater fish.

Some store owners claim that their fresh tanks are empty because they are switching to frozen fish. Others remain silent.

Consumers are concerned because of the long history of food contamination scandals including contaminated cooking oil, pigs that died of disease being sold for human consumption, baby milk contaminated with chemicals, and meat saturated with coloring and additives.

What is concerning to me (other than the possibility of contaminated food) is the hushed up attitude being taken by store owners, and by China’s food and Drug Administration.
