“The security of Israel requires the acquisition of submarines and the renewal of the submarine fleet…. Increasing the security and strength of the state of Israel is the only consideration that guided me in acquiring the submarines.” ~Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Israel is looking to purchase three submarines to bolster their fleet of five. According to Moshe Yaalon, a former defense minister, the Israeli military doesn’t need the submarines. Mr. Yaalon resigned last May over a rift with current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The purchase is from Germany through ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Mr. Netanyahu’s personal lawyer also works with that company, leading to allegations of a possible under-the-table deal.
In short, we have a controversy over a controversial weapons deal by the controversial prime minister of a controversial nation.
