Betsy DeVos was confirmed to serve as the nation’s Secretary of Education this afternoon with a vote of 51-50. Vice President Mike Pence came in to break the tie (this was the first time ever that the tiebreaker was used for a cabinet nominee). Betsy DeVos is easily the most controversial education secretary in our nation’s history – even in a Republican majority Senate, she lost two votes from GOP senators.
I have been following the nomination of Betsy DeVos very closely. I was not very enthusiastic about her hearing. She has never been a public educator and in my opinion demonstrated a clear lack of knowledge about a lot of basic issues. The Democrats spent 24 hours on the Senate floor doing their best to dissuade just one Republican but could not succeed. I think this is a precursor of how things are going to go – Democrats scream and holler and organize but at the end of the day, don’t have the votes.
