President Donald J. Trump announced Tuesday that he would be willing to compromise (!) on a bill that would allow millions of undocumented workers to stay in America legally. At the mention of the word “compromise”, several senators on both sides of the aisle reportedly rushed to Google to look up what the word meant (kidding).
What is no laughing matter, however, is the impact that this could have on our political system, and more specifically our discourse. In a nation that is more and more polarized, for one side to take a step into the middle ground is long overdue. Instead of arguing over tweets and sound bites and how advisors sit on the couch, a major political player made an actual move towards substantial policy. It’s not a popular thing to say these days (and I’m no big fan of Trump), but I for one am impressed with his willingness to compromise.
