On Tuesday the European Union’s top court ruled that employers are allowed to ban the wearing of head scarves, if there is a restriction on religious garments of all faiths. The consequences of this ruling may have long lasting affects relating to the freedom of religion. This issue has been a hot topic for w while, following the firing of women who refused to comply with their employer’s wish to remove their headscarf. Because the ruling applies to all religions it is not directly targeting Muslims, but it is no secret that the mass influx of refugees from primarily Muslim countries has not been well received by all in the European Union.
Europe is experiencing a surge of far right and nationalistic sentiment similar to the wave that swept the US election. Their elections are coming up, the fate of the refugees and the rights they should have is hanging in the balance. It will be interesting to see if this ruling plays a big role in religious equality in Europe.
