Recent series of events, most noticeably North Korea’s nuclear testing and S.Kor-US joint military drill, have been intensifying the tension between South Korea,US and North Korea. Also, with the change in regimes in both countries (new dictatorship and new presidency), the political and economic atmosphere is thick and heavy with hostility and worries.
Although it is unlikely that the North will actually attack the South, the threats are concerning. It is surprising to see the lack of reaction from South Korea’s media and the government. Perhaps it’s because South Korea is too used to the North’s long history of bluffing and engagement in small scale attacks that did not lead up to a war.
As much as it is important not to give in to the North’s irrational demands as they use the nuclear weapon and threats to war as bargaining chips, it is also critical not to brush off the North’s provocation. Being casual with impending danger makes attacks easier and defense loose.
